The latest celebrity to fall into the "is she pregnant?" crossfire is Reese Witherspoon who released a statement through her publicist denying the rumor that she is pregnant with agent Jim Toth's baby.
The typically very thin actress has looked slightly curvier than usual, which sparked the rumor. She is currently divorced from actor Ryan Phillippe with whom she has two children.
I don't get it.
I know actors and actresses make a ton of money, so it is hard to feel too sorry for them, but if they gain three pounds, suddenly they are pregnant? In the past few weeks Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry and more have been subject to the rumor mill and most of it is due to poundage in the midsection.
Being thin is the job of these celebs, I suppose. In real life, if we are period-bloated or slightly heftier after a stuffed burrito, no one wonders if we are with child.
But in the world of Hollywood, you must be preggo.
I also have to wonder -- who are these people who care so much? This question might seem odd coming from a person who writes about it, but it is my job to monitor the rumors. Therefore, I have to assume that it is some one's job to monitor star's bellies for slight bulges.
Does that strike anyone else as odd?
I am all for babies. They rock. I love them. But it would be nice if we could let stars gain a little weight in peace without making them take a pregnancy test on national TV before believing they are not in a family way.
What do you think of this obsession we have with "baby bumps"?
