Birth would be so much easier if we were all robots with detachable bellies.
A training seminar at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, last week utilized this robot that screams and moans and ultimately gives "birth" to a robot baby.
The robot is designed to help prepare health care professionals for emergency situations like prolapsed cords. But in watching the video, I have to say it's a far cry from the real deal.
Obviously any training is better than no training, but this robot seems a little ... how shall I say this ... not realistic?
Its belly comes off! If only ours did, too ...
There are many other ways I would imagine training might be better and none of them include robots.
Even real people would probably be able to act better than a robot. Besides, are they really going to take a giant barbie with a detachable belly more seriously than an actor who is actually human?
Real birth is unpredictable. No simulation exercise can really help a doctor or a nurse be in the moment. In fact, they may feel better prepared than they are because of the robot. What if the woman insists she wanted a natural birth and refuses a c-section? How will they deal with this?
What about the woman who passes out and her spouse is panicking? How do the doctors deal with that?
This technology is great until it lulls doctors and nurses into the false sense that they know what they're doing. Use it, train on it, learn what you're doing, but also understand you aren't "trained" for real birth.
We're real people and like it or not, there is no simulator for any of us.

I HATE them using this crap!
1- It trains them to think that they have the ability to force a woman to do what they say in labor. This is false.
2- No woman should birth on her back or laying down. It makes baby fight gravity and narrows mom's pelvis.
I agree w/ Pishyah!
I think training people for different situations is a really good thing. After all, would you prefer that if you did have something serious happen, your nurses or doctor had read about it and knew the theory, or practiced handling the situation on as close to the real thing as they could get?
Labor IS unpredictable. As such it's not like most can get lots of training on certain things through real life expereince.
I don't really get why this is a problem. This is no different than showing with a model of the pelvis how the baby comes out in different positions so people understand some of the rare things that can happen as a result of different things.
Much better they "practice" on a robot than a person.
I'm all for natural birth and think they need to keep their hands out of peoples' business, but uh, people have a midwife at your home birth because sometimes you might need a little assistance. It's better that they've practiced what to do as much as possible.
This is why APRENTICE-BASED education along with the academics is the best way to go. It has traditionally been the way birth attendants have always handled birth in every culture. With the amount of education, evidence, and experienced providers out there, it is sickening to think that they will spend a ton of money on a device like that. I really feel that it is short-changing the future doctors and nurses who use it, and in turn the women they serve in the future.
I think they should have actors portray the woman, and only use the physical robot for the things the woman cannot do.
