There's nothing like a look at her baby to get a pregnant woman all ferklempt.
Offer her an ultrasound, and she's running for another peek.
But a new pregnancy spa offering ultrasounds begs the question: how many ultrasounds does one pregnant woman really need?
Not that many.
In fact, maybe not any.
Or at least not more than one in most pregnancies.
There are the high-risk pregnancies where women are subjected -- on doctor's orders -- to repeated ultrasounds for medical reasons. Ask one, and she'll probably tell you she's had enough.
She'd had them all over in exchange for a low-risk, less-worry pregnancy.
So why are all the rest of the ladies clamoring for another look-see inside the womb?
Because they apparently aren't listening to their doctor. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggests moms limit their exposure as much as possible, advising against the "keepsake" ultrasound:
"Not much is known about the effects of repeated exposure to ultrasound. It seems to be safe, but it is possible that problems could be found in the future.
"Moreover, the workers at these centers often are not trained to interpret the images for you. Based on the ultrasound, you may be falsely reassured that your baby is doing well, when in fact there may be a problem. Or, you may be alarmed that the image shows an abnormality and, because these centers are not medical facilities, you will be left without any professional help. Obstetric ultrasound is best obtained through standard prenatal car."
I had two ultrasounds -- the first to check for fetal defects, a standard use approved by the ACOG, the second because of a fetal complication.
My husband hoped for more because our baby crossed her legs during sonogram number one -- keeping us from figuring out her gender. But my doctor didn't see a need, and I took that as a sign.
Are you ultrasound hungry?

I had 2 ultrasounds 1 to find out how far along i was when i first found out i was pregnant and so my husband could be present because we thought he was going to Iraq at the time and another at the typical 5 to 6 month time frame to find out gender and if there were any defects.
With my oldest I had two (had to fight just to get the second one to find out the gender). With my youngest I had nearly 30 because I have RH disease. I loved seeing my little guy but I was truely tired of having u/s's.
With my first pregnanice I had 3 utlrasound. One to found out the sex. two found out why he wasn't moving so much and it was because we was breech and third was was to check his fluid.
With my oldest we had the sonogram and then an ultrasound at 20 weeks. With my youngest we had the sonogram, the 20 week ultrasound, a gender ultrasound and a 3D/4D ultrasound. Some friends of my MIL own a 3D ultrasound place so we got the best package for $40.
Yeah if its being done by the Doctor, I'll go for it. Some side of the road shop, no way.
with the first only two - one to confirm pregnancy/due date and the second at 20 weeks for the gender etc.
With the second 4 or 5 or 6 can't really remember because they thought there was low fluid then when they did that one they thought there was fluid on her heart so I had to go to a specialist etc etc.
I've had four and I'm 14 weeks. I have at least one more to go to check baby's anatomy. I worked with a fertility clinic to start where with I had 4 and now with a midwife who does a 20w only. I'm honestly fine with them. I've read up on them and I'm totally fine deciding for myself how many is too many. I can't say if I was offered one today, that I wouldn't go and take it.
I had my first at 8 weeks. Another at 14 weeks due to no heartbeat being found. Another at 20 weeks to look at development and look for possible defects and after that I had them every month due to my son growing so quickly, an excesse of amniotic fluid and premature labor. I do have to admit that I enjoyed seeing my little boy any chance I got.
I had 1 ultrasound with my daughter, for the exact reason listed in this article. My doctor didn't feel that it was necessary to have anymore to avoid all unknown risks. So we had the one routine u/s at 19 weeks to check that everything was looking normal.
