Eggs aren't the only food to beware as of late. This week more than 380,000 pounds of deli meat from Walmart have been recalled because it's potentially contaminated with Listeria.
Listeria can be especially harmful to pregnant women, as it can cause miscarriage and stillbirth. It can also pose serious risks to young children, the elderly, and others with weak immune systems.
While it's believed most of the meat, sold inside Walmart's Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches, has already been consumed with no reports of illness, you should still double check your refrigerator for the following sandwiches:
Black Forest Ham With Natural Juices Coated With Caramel Color; Hot Ham, Hard Salami, Pepperoni, Sandwich Peppers; Virginia Brand Ham With Natural Juices, Made in New York, Fully Cooked Bacon, Sandwich Pickles, Sandwich Peppers; and Angus Roast Beef Coated With Caramel Color.
According to the USDA, the packages also bear vendor number "398412808" as well as the USDA mark of inspection and "Est. 5222." The meat products were produced between June 18 to July 2, 2010 with "Use By" dates between August 20 to September 10, 2010.
If you have any of these products, you can return them to Walmart for a refund.
This recall is a reminder of one of those annoying pregnancy rules that is a rule for a reason -- no deli meat unless it's heated until steaming. I love cold sandwiches probably more than most foods, but when pregnant, the risk just isn't worth it.
Do you eat cold deli meat while pregnant? If so, will this recall make you rethink it?

when i was pregnant with my son i never ate any kind of lunchmeat.
oh my god its all I crave. I would eat six ham and cheese sandwiches a day if I could. I did with my first child too. He is perfectly fine. I won't buy from Walmart, and I only buy the highest quality meat and cheese anyway from the deli... aka, I spend about fifteen dollars weekly on cold cuts alone. I crave it, and my doctors haven't told me not to eat it..But when reports like thsi come out, obviously we should pay attention.
oops forgot to mention... I am about six months pregnant. Duh me.
I don't eat lunch meat while pregnant just b/c of the risk & how I've read you aren't supposed to.
