I lusted after the Petunia Pickle Bottom line of diaper bags when I was pregnant like a tween drooling over Jacob the werewolf.
But for all my devotion to a bag that could survive babydom and go beyond to become a kick-ass purse, the $349 price tag made this a want, not a must-have (and made me an ardent fan of the PPB outlet sales!).
Oh ladies, what I wouldn't give to be pregnant again just for this deal: Petunia Pickle Bottom has designed a line for Target.
And since you're buying in style, this is the time to pronounce it Tar-jay!
The two bags in the line look to be made of a less lush fabric (I haven't hit Target to touch them yet, but the description lists PVC) -- allowing them to offer each for under $50 apiece.
They sport either a mod dot style in blue (left) or the pretty pink tulips (above) -- in keeping with a stylish look that can double as an out on the town bag so you don't feel like you're compromising your own style with this ugly character-printed monstrosity.
I'm not crazy about PVC; I'll say it. It's great for the waterproofing, and probably much easier to clean (bonus), but the velvets of the chocolate decadence bag by Petunia Pickle Bottom literally make me swoon.
Still, with this price, I can buy two -- forget pregnancy, I could see myself rocking the mod dot for dragging my toddler to the pool with all her stuff!
And with free shipping if you spend $50 at the moment, now is the time stock up big on getting ready for baby!
Do you like the new PPB line or do you feel they're compromising too much for the lower price point?

Cute bags!
If you read the comments on the Target site, they aren't all that favorable. It sounds as though they compromised much to launch a line at Target.
I, too, have coveted a PPB bag for quite some time... Totally out of my budget! :( These new bags are cute, but even in the photographs you can see that they don't compare to the real deal.
Compromising. I love PPB bags (have a few myself), but I do NOT want to be lumped in with this PVC bag and the muddled print.
Until I saw this, i thought PPB designs were always thoughtful and well-designed.
I picked up a bag last week- so excited to see a PPB at Target, but promptly returned it when I found it was made from PVC. I emailed all three companies about how dissapointed I was in their product. The fact that it was made from PVC is so disturbing on a few different levels. All of PPB's other bags are 'proudly PVC-free', which indicates that the company is well aware of the danger that PVC products post to humans, especially babies and small children. The profits will benefit, in part, Baby Buggy, which is meant to be a socially responsible charity whose aim is to help provide items for babies of NYC families in need. Target also issued a press release a few years ago stating that they were going to systematically stop selling baby/children items that were manufacturered from PVC. The whole thing just doesn't make sense to me. If you're not able to produce a $50 bag with PVC-free materials, then why do it? I don't understand why PPB would want to compromise the integrity of their brand this way? It's like they are taking advantage of the 'budget' consumer, assuming they don't care about the safety of their children. So disappointed in the whole project. There are many other ways to do something for charity without selling a harmful product.
I do think they have compromised too much. Using PVC so that they could make it more cost-friendly, even though both PPB & Target know it isn't safe is a bad move. It goes against what they've both said they stand for. There are ways to get a PVC-free PPB at a discount. Hopefully they'll either change the way they produce bags for Target or stop compromising quality and safety and quit making the Target line.
I just bought this diaper bag today to carry my baby girls stuff in :) love it.
Update: PPB posted this statement today on Facebook and and in email back to me. I still think the use of PVC was a bad decision for a company that considers itself environmentally responsible, and for a host of other reasons, but PPB does insist the bags are safe:
Petunia's ethos center on quality, design, environment, beauty, function and giving-back as much as we can. This is why we love living, breathing and carrying Petunia ourselves. Therefore it's rightfully a shock (for some) to see Target or PVC.
We do want to clear up that these bags have gone through extensive testing and indeed are Phthalate Free products. These bags fall under Petunia Standards, Target Standards as well as exceed California Prop 65 Standards (which have set some of the highest standards) for Lead and other toxins. Phthalate's and Lead are the big issues with traditional PVC, and we made sure that we were as far from them as possible.
We knew some people would disagree with this limited-time program with Target as well as selling non-organic product; honestly we really struggled with this too. Our tipping point came when we realized the opportunity to positively affect lives through the charity. All in all, we hope to help generate $300,000-$500,000 for children and parents by participating in this program. It is in our blood to give back and with this project, its price point, and where it was to be sold; we felt we still delivered on our core beliefs.
Meh, you know, you can often pick up PPB bags on Craigslist for less -- I don't think these bags come close to the perfection of the "real" bags.
II just got this bag yesterday and I really love it. It's amazingly cute, large enough to get ALL of the babys things in PLUS his 16 month old brothers things as well. It doesn't look all big and bulky though which is a plus too. I really enjoy it and it doesn't feel flimsy or anything either. I've been telling ALL my friends about it and they can't wait to go look and buy theirs too.
