Alicia Keys Baby Blessing: Will You Honor Your Unborn Baby?

Christine Coppa

You've heard of baptisms and other religious ceremonies, like Jewish circumcisions (the bris), that take place after the baby is born.

What about a "Bless-the-Baby" ceremony for an unborn child? For newly engaged couple Alicia Keys and rapper Swizz Beatz, this was a lovely and appreciated surprise!

The couple was in South Africa doing a charity event for Bobbi Bear under a special tree where kids who were abused retreat to get healing and soak up positive energy. Little did the famous parents-to-be know that in addition to honoring children who came to the event, their child would be honored too.

Swizz Beatz joked to People mag: “It turned into this ceremony that I didn’t know about. I felt like I was on Punk’d or something! But, yes we had a special blessing [for our child].”

Keys was dressed in traditional jewelry and a stunning blue robe. She and her unborn baby were both given Zulu names during the blessing ritual while standing under the powerful fig tree, known as a healing tree to locals.

Did you partake in a blessing or spiritual ritual prior to giving birth? What about after? Please share.
