Joran van der Sloot, the tall, cute Dutchman, 22, that is accused in the horrific murder of Peruvian business student Stephany Flores, 21, is apparently a wanted man -- but not because of his crimes ... or maybe it is because of his crimes?
Van der Sloot confessed out right to the murder that took place in his Lima hotel room, but now maintains his confession was coerced and wants it all removed from the record. He also remains the chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance in Aruba of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway.
A real ladies' man, huh?
Well, actually, yep. Van der Sloot told a Dutch newspaper that he's received dozens of marriage proposals from women sending him letters -- and they want to have his babies too.
Is this a joke? Unfortunately, no. There are women in this world who are drawn to men that have done horrific things. Why? Is it normal?
Jack Levin, a criminologist told CBS Early Show:
"These women would love to date and marry a rock star or a rap idol. But if they send a letter to a rock star, they're lucky if they get some kind of computerized signature on a photograph and that's it. These new celebrities, these inmates, are very different. These women may actually get a marriage proposal. The appeal of those inmates is getting the response."
But marriage and a baby are two very different things. It's one thing for you to commit to this lifestyle, but not the same for the innocent baby. In One Big Happy Family, a book edited by Rebecca Walker, contributor Asha Bandele wrote an essay called "Woman Up" -- about single motherhood and the circumstance of such. She met her husband when she was 23 and when he was incarcerated for a gang-related murder he committed at the age of 18; she read poetry to inmates as part of a volunteer program. They married and had a baby -- but that baby is why they ended up breaking up. Bandele left that life behind and found one with light and hope for her daughter.
What do you think of the attention Van der Sloot is getting from women around the world? Do you know anyone who married an inmate?
