Flickr photo by SarahMcDApril is Cesarean Awareness Month, a good time to read up on this surgical procedure and become familiar with the risks and facts. Here's one: A third of all pregnant women in the US now get c-sections, the highest rate ever. Sure, some are emergency procedures done to save the life of mom and baby, but are all of them? Nope. Many women still opt to schedule this procedure when they don't need to.
The tide may be changing, however, with the rash of celebrities and others who are becoming more outspoken about their natural births, including Jessica Alba and Gisele Bundchen, who even had a home birth in a bathtub.
Rarely do you hear about the celebrities who chose to have cesareans anymore, as was the case 10 years ago.
Here's a list of celebrities who had cesarians in fairly recent years -- not all of these were necessarily scheduled, however; some were considered emergencies and unavoidable:
Jamie Lynn Spears
Giada De Laurentiis
Anna Nicole Smith
