On Monday, Tamera Mowry returned to her job cohosting The Real following the death of her niece, Alaina Housley. The 18-year-old, sadly, was one of the victims in the horrific mass shooting that took place November 7 at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, and since then, Tamera has been sharing heartbreaking updates on how she and her family are doing via social media. During the show, she also took the time to address the audience, speaking about grief and losing a loved one, and she shared her plans for advocating for change.

Shockingly, some people couldn't stop themselves from criticizing what she said.

  • Tamera spoke on The Real about how her family is trying to find a balance "of moving forward and grieving at the same time."

Tamera and her family frantically searched for Alaina on November 8 after her suitemate took to Twitter, revealing the Pepperdine University freshman was still missing after the shooting. Tragically, Alaina was one of the 12 victims who lost their lives during the senseless killing.

  • "It's just been a little over two weeks," she tearfully revealed. "She would want me to be here and she would want me, sweet Alaina, to move forward."

"I don't like to say move on, because I don't think I'll ever move on with the fact that she's not here with me or with our family," the celeb mom continued. "But she would want me to move forward and to use her voice as a catalyst for change, and that’s why I'm here today."

  • The star then went on to talk about how we need to "fight for the safety of our children" and how that includes gun control.

"We need change when it comes to gun violence," she said. "And I don’t care if I have to knock on the doors of the White House to do it, to advocate change."

Tamera Mowry added that the country is currently divided and "diseased," and part of the healing process will be finding "commonality instead of differences," which is something that the new organization, Alaina's Voice, will aim to do.

"Our main goal is to advocate for people who have mental illnesses, that they need help -- including our veterans. Also, Alaina, she loved music .... She would want us to create scholarships for children, for students who aren't able to go to college and to pursue music -- so we're going to create scholarships for that. For students who are in need. We hope to advocate to the media out there, that when they tell a story, there's no need to show a shooter's face, or give them their 15 minutes of fame -- unless it's a manhunt, obviously .... I don't want Alaina, or any person who died of gun violence, to have died in vain. It has to stop."

  • But not everyone is supportive of what Tamera was saying.

If you can't tell by the comments, people can't help but criticize the star, saying changes needs to be more about mental health than gun control.

  • Arguments seemed to center on whether or not changing gun laws will prevent people from killing others.

Yes, we've heard it all before, but seriously -- where's the sympathy here?

  • And quickly turned into a full-on debate.

We get it: People are really protective about their guns. Still, time and place...?

  • Someone even had the nerve to criticize Tamera herself, saying that she didn't care about this stuff prior to losing her niece.

That's neither here nor there, but OK.

  • However, one person did clarify by saying there will always be violent people -- and that making it harder to get guns could prevent mass killings.

The commenter did say "it will make it harder for them to kill many people quickly" without a gun, which is a fair point.

  • Also, it's possible to focus on *both* mental health *and* gun control.

It doesn't have to be one or the other.

  • Oftentimes, there are multiple factors are involved with these shootings.

Let's stop being divided and work together!

  • But is it really *this* hard to show some compassion to a grieving family?

The fact of the matter is that the Housley family lost a loved one -- a niece, an aunt, an 18-year-old child -- and people are now arguing over what this family is doing to help themselves heal. It's honestly shocking.

... and we really need to do better.

It's devastating to lose a loved one and especially so in such a horrific way. Our heart goes out to Tamera and all of the families involved in the shooting.
