She had to be expecting the backlash. Jill (Duggar) Dillard attended an event at the Arkansas governor's mansion over the weekend to celebrate 100 years since women gained the right to vote. Considering the family she's from, as well as her outspoken pro-life views, you know people were going to come for her and drag her over the coals.

Jill shared several photos from the gathering, including one with Governor Asa Hutchinson.

No doubt it was an incredible opportunity for Jill. Regardless of political affiliation, it's always an honor to be invited to the governor's mansion. Jill captioned her series of pictures, "Thanks to my friend, Nancy, I had a lovely time at the governor's mansion for a tea celebrating 100 years since women were finally able to exercise the right to vote!"

It wasn't long before fans wondered why Jill was celebrating women's rights, while living in such a patriarchal subculture.-placeholder

The Duggar family has made no secret over the years that they believe husbands and fathers are to exert control over their families, in the form of Biblical leadership, and that wives are to be submissive to their husbands. Further, adult daughters are to remain under their father's "leadership" until they get married themselves.

Maybe it's going a bit far to say they have no rights ... after all, as long as their husbands give their approval, they can do what they want! Oh wait ...

And some even called it "ironic."-placeholder

Then there's the whole issue of a woman's right to choose whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.-placeholder

Because for a lot of people, a female can't be both pro-life and pro-women. We'd say these are two separate issues, honestly, but we get people's point. If someone views the right to an abortion as one just as essential as women's suffrage, then of course they're going to get upset that Jill would celebrate one and not the other.

Of course Jill can post about whatever she wants, but she shouldn't be surprised when people get critical.-placeholder

After all, she can't expect to talk about how her husband has authority over her as his wife and then celebrate female independence.

At least she seems to wear what she wants now. Baby steps.
