5 Groups Founded Since the Sandy Hook Shooting That Need Your Help (PHOTOS)

Sandy Hook anniversaryToday marks the third anniversary of the tragic, senseless mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Three years have passed since our collective horror and heartbreak at the loss of 26 innocent lives -- 20 of whom were sweet little children. What have we done since then? Are our children any safer? Has anything changed?

It may seem like the answers to those questions are: nothing, no, and again, no. After all, there have been 1,044 more mass shootings (defined as four or more victims) in the United States since that dreadful day. And we have lost 554 of our nation's children to death by firearms in that same time period. That's one precious child, every other day.

But, the truth is, while things may feel frightening and bleak, it's important to know that there are more and more people fighting every day to make this country a better, safer place. And we can join them.

In the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting, quite a few of the survivors decided to channel their horrific grief into action. Often in honor of their beloved loved ones, these incredible people have started advocacy groups to make our society better and safer, whether through better gun control, or through advocating for mental health services.

Today is the first time since the awful shooting that school has been in session in Newtown on the anniversary. We can't imagine how difficult this anniversary is for anyone affected -- in any way -- by that tragedy. But saying that our hearts go out to them (which they do) isn't enough anymore. It's time to join the fight, to honor the lost by taking action, by making this world worthy of all the little children who sit in school today.

That's the best way to honor all of those names.
