Rick Santorum's Response to Bruce Jenner's Transition Is Sure to Anger Fans

Notoriously conservative politician and possible 2016 presidential candidate Rick Santorum recently gave his opinion about Bruce Jenner's transition to become a woman, and what he said will no doubt rub some people the wrong way.

The former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania attended the South Carolina Republican Convention on Saturday, May 2, and was asked about his feelings toward the 1976 Olympic decathlon winner. What he had to say is bound to anger fans ... but only his own supporters, not Jenner's.

Santorum told a group of reporters at the event:

If he says he's a woman, then he's a woman. My responsibility as a human being is to love and accept everybody. Not to criticize people for who they are.

Whoa. That was just about as unexpected as Bruce coming out as a conservative Republican during his Diane Sawyer interview. After Sawyer pulled herself together from Jenner's shocking revelation about his political allegiances, she asked him if he would be willing to go to House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to "help promote the LGBT cause."

"In a heartbeat, why not," he replied. "And I think they'd be very receptive to it."

Santorum has been criticized in the past not only for his alleged misogynistic views against women, but especially for his stance against the LGBT community in general.

Now he's urging the public to react to Jenner's bombshell news in a "compassionate and respectful" manner. I can imagine that some of Santorum's fans will be appalled to hear his views on this topic, but I'm glad to see that the times are changing. Who are we to judge others on how they want to live their lives? As long as they're not hurting anyone, who cares?

It's great to see people like Rick Santorum come out and openly change their stances when it comes to matters of human dignity. Bruce has made a choice to be true to himself, and that commands respect, no matter how you feel about his choices.

Are you shocked to hear someone like Rick Santorum support Bruce Jenner?
