Men Find Out What the 'F' Word Really Means & Like It (VIDEO)

man on street interviewed upworthy feminismWould you call yourself a feminist? If not, it may be because you don't know what the true definition of the word is. Hey, it's okay! Unfortunately, many people have NO idea what feminism actually is. And if you don't know what it is, how can you say whether you're a feminist or not? In a new, must-watch video, Upworthy.com spoke with several men on the street to set the record straight.

Good for them!

But I still can't help but sigh that it took a bit of arm-twisting and a lot of explaining to get most of these men -- particularly the younger ones who didn't live through the women's movement of the '60s and '70s, referred to as second-wave feminism -- to understand what feminism is.

Somewhere along the line, we started to expect movie and sitcom actresses and pop stars like Shailene Woodley, Kaley Cuoco, and Taylor Swift to identify themselves as feminists, because by the very nature of their jobs, they could be some little girl's role model. When their responses reflect how ignorant they are and fall as flat as "no, because I love men," "no, because I enjoy being a wife!" or admitting that they had never been taught the definition of the word growing up, it's more than a little disappointing. Maybe they don't have an obligation to be advocates of equality, but they certainly do have a platform they could be using.

Our mothers' generation didn't fight so hard for equality in the workplace, and their mothers' mothers didn't fight tirelessly to be able to vote so that we could sit around speaking out against gender equality in the year 2015.

With hope, the more we talk about what it actually means, the more eye-opening there'll be, and the more likely everyone will be to come out swinging as a feminist. Because saying you're NOT a feminist is just plain ignorant, no matter how you slice it -- whether it's because you DO understand what it means and don't agree that men and women should have equal rights and equal opportunities OR you're just saying it because you are utterly, shamefully clueless.

Thoughts on this video? Why do you think some people say they're not a feminist?
