State of the Union 2015: Obama Makes Impossible Promises & Jokes About Campaigning

Barack Obama 2015 SOTULet’s face it -- the annual State of the Union Address is never the most exciting thing on TV on any given Tuesday in January -- or any other time, if we’re honest. 2015 was no exception, as Barack Obama went on and on about impossible-to-fund ideas (free college tuition?), another call to close Gitmo, and a fair amount of Bush-blaming, because why not? But the lame duck president did make one pretty good funny, that had Republicans and Democrats alike chuckling.

Near the end of his seemingly endless (seriously, was it longer than usual tonight? Or was I just watching it sober?) President Obama lamented, "I have no more campaigns to run." Before he could launch into his next line, applause broke out from the GOP attendees.

Without missing a beat, Obama quipped with a smirk, "I know because I won both of them."

Heh. That's actually pretty clever, even if it's not entirely true. The bit about having more campaigns to run, not the part about him winning the last two Presidential elections. He won those. Le sigh, but he did. And then the biggest wave of Republicans ever took back the House and then the Senate. Also a massive number of Governors' seats. Just saying.

Anyway, before he could even finish shaking hands after his entirely-too-long laundry list of promises and cliches -- I received an email from the man himself: "Hey, Jenny" was the subject line.

I love fill-in-the-blank fundraiser emails, don't you? It's like the leader of the free world knows my name! Anyway, I clicked through to see what the prez his copywriters had to say.

"I hope you're excited about the agenda I laid out tonight for 2015. Now it's time to get to work. Chip in $10 or more, and let's go."

So much for no more campaigning.

Well, it's another year and another State of the Union. Congrats to everyone who made it through the entire thing without falling asleep, getting drunk, or vowing to give up following politics forever. I'm sure several of you managed all three. For the rest of you, please enjoy this clip of Obama making a funny. It was the best part of the evening.
