GOP Staffer Shouldn't Have to Resign for Criticizing Obama Daughters

Sasha Malia ObamaLast week on Thanksgiving Eve, Barack Obama did his presidential thing and pardoned a turkey from meeting his fate for a feast. Two turkeys, actually, affectionately named Mac and Cheese. It's something presidents have been doing for ... a long time, and he was accompanied by his daughters Sasha and Malia, who looked less than impressed by the whole ordeal. Now, a GOP staffer is losing her job, because she pointed out that the Obama daughters looked bored to be there.

Elizabeth Lauten, the soon-to-be former communications director for Republican Congressman Stephen Fincher took issue with the First Daughters' "sloppy" appearance with their dad at his pardoning of the National Thanksgiving Turkey on Wednesday, November 26.

Lauten posted her criticism of Sasha and Malia Obama to Facebook, writing, "Dear Sasha and Malia, I get you're both in those awful teen years, but you're a part of the First Family, try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play. Then again your mother and father don't respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so I'm guessing you're coming up a little short in the 'good role model' department."

Ouch! It's hard to tell which Lauten was more peeved over -- their outfits or their obviously bored expressions. The girls looked casual and trendy, with Malia, 16, in a short skirt and tights with a sweater, and Sasha, 13, in a dress and cardigan. They both seemed to roll their eyes several times, looking like the bored, unamused teens they probably felt like.

Lauten continued her post, which has since been deleted, but not before the damage was done, "Nevertheless, stretch yourself. Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar. And certainly don't make faces during televised, public events."

And with that, she likely just ended her career in Washington, even though it's totally undeserved. OK, maybe she should have left the bar reference out, but they did look like they were ready for a casual night out on the town with friends. Even more than that -- they did look totally bored and slouched, arms crossed and everything.

This woman made nothing up. We can disagree all day long about whether or not Sasha and Malia's behavior itself was inappropriate (I for one was sort of amused by it), but pointing it out shouldn't lose this girl her job. Yes, if she had posted for her boss, or made the statement in any official capacity for the office -- fire her. But staffers should be allowed to have personal lives too, with their own opinions on actual events that actually happened.

Instead, Lauten reported to NBC on Monday, December 1, that her resignation from Rep. Fincher's team is "in the works." Not only that, but her personal life is being picked apart too. The Smoking Gun uncovered court documents showing that she was arrested as a teenager for shoplifting at the mall in her North Carolina hometown. According to the site, the first-time offender's case was "handled via the District Court’s deferred prosecution program, which resulted in the charge’s eventual dismissal after the future scold stayed out of trouble for a prescribed period."

I suppose anyone who criticizes her for that should lose their job? Or is it OK now that she's an adult, even though she was just being a dumb teenager at the time?

Regardless, let this be a lesson to all the other Republicans out there -- don't you dare question the casual dress or bored attitude of the Obama daughters.

Do you think Elizabeth Lauten should lose her job?
