President Obama's Anti-Terrorism Speech Was Completely Confusing

Barack Obama

On Wednesday night, President Barack Obama gave a speech on the economy, which happened to be preceded by a speech on the Islamic terrorists known as ISIS, or ISIL, who are not actually Islamic, even though they claim to be followers of Islam and the prophet Mohammad.

Are you confused yet? Me too. I did not understand Obama's anti-terrorism speech at all, especially the part about curing Ebola or our booming economy. So let's break it down, shall we?

First off, what the heck is ISIL, and what happened to ISIS? Apparently they're the same thing. The terrorist group is gaining power in the Middle East and recently beheaded American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff. They used to be the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, but now are referred to as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.

The Levant is the historical name given to the entire region east of the Mediterranean from Egypt and is used to "emphasize the group's goal to expand its influence beyond the borders of Syria and Iraq." Peachy.

So what about Obama's claim that ISIL is not "religious"? The Commander-in-Chief said, "ISIL is not 'Islamic.' No religion condones the killing of innocents, and the vast majority of ISIL's victims have been Muslim."

OK ... well that's just inaccurate. The religion of Islamic Extremism is gung-ho on killing innocents. This seems a particularly outlandish statement to make on the eve of September 11. Are we forgetting that 13 years ago, religious Islamic extremist nut jobs killed nearly 3,000 people in a senseless and devastating attack? Geez. It's fine to say they don't subscribe to mainstream Islam, but to say their religion doesn't advocate for the murder of innocents is just wrong.

Oyza.

Then the prez launched into how we're going to send drones to combat these terrorists and send another 475 service members to Iraq. So what are we celebrating today -- pulling our troops out of the Middle East situation or sending them in? It's so hard to keep track these days.

Insert lots of stuff about working with our allies over there, protecting innocents, etc. No real details on how this will be accomplished other than, "We will continue to draw on our substantial counterterrorism capabilities to prevent ISIL attacks."

Don't worry about Obama becoming Bush 2.0 though! He said, "This effort will be different from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It will not involve American combat troops fighting on foreign soil." Except for the 475 he mentioned minutes earlier. Dang, speech writing is hard.

So far, we have no idea what the plan for dealing with ISIS ISIL is. Seems like a good time to talk about the economy and job creation. No really. That happened. "For all the work that remains, our businesses are in the longest uninterrupted stretch of job creation in our history."

Has anyone told the president he can't run for a third term?

I have no idea what that speech was, but one Twitter user summed it up perfectly:

Kinda sad General Motors didn't get a shout-out for good measure.

Did you watch Obama's speech? Were you as confused as most people seemed to be?
