Don't Think We Need Feminism Now? Just Watch (VIDEOS)

feminismThere are women against feminism. I am not one of those women. I have experienced misogyny firsthand. Countless times. I've been witness to prejudice against women in several forms. I would love to live in a world where this wasn't an issue -- for me, for my daughter, for my sister and friends, for all women -- but as the saying goes, we still have a long way to go. Even now.

Still, there is a movement called Women Against Feminism, and while I don't agree with all they have to say, I do think their core message is similar. If only we could work together on that. Women are people, just like men, and we deserve equal rights and treatment. But the movement is divisive, and that is not helpful. If there is any doubt feminism -- in its true form -- is needed, watch this video called "If Men Were Women."

Seeing the men on the magazine covers made me laugh, but the end ... that boy looking at the images of the Presidents and seeing all women, that is the kind of thing that resonates with a child. In reality, that child is a girl who grows up with the notion that only men are Presidents. Maybe that will propel a woman to be part of the change. Maybe, though, that will give a woman the feeling that she isn't good enough.

There are always going to be differences between men and women -- between one woman and another woman. We are people, individuals, with different likes and preferences and styles and behaviors. It's not those differences that are the issue. It's the injustices because of our differences.

Women are paid less than men. Women are harassed on a daily basis all over the world simply because they are women. Women are blamed for being raped because of how they acted or how they dressed. There are people in our society -- our supposedly civilized society -- that excuse a man for sexually assaulting a woman because "she was asking for it." They somehow believe that a man's violent actions are acceptable in this case -- that they cannot be controlled, and it's somehow okay for a man to be a wild animal without morals and commit crimes against women because a woman did something, anything, they felt made them "deserve" it. This is why we need feminism -- in all its definitions. We need to bond together as women, as people -- we need to all realize that just because these injustices aren't against us personally, they are happening to women all the time.

This French short "Oppressed Majority" by director Eléonore Pourriat is even more powerful. Sometimes we need to see things as the direct opposite in order to understand the reality.

This is why we need feminism. Feminism means different things to different people, but we have to take it to the core meaning -- being a feminist means advocating women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. Anyone can be a feminist. I wish everyone was.

Do you identify yourself as a feminist? Why or why not? What do you think of these videos?
