Joe Biden's Response to Prom Invite Is Almost As Shocking As the Invite

Joe BidenAs far as dream prom dates go, I'd imagine Joe Biden isn't really that far up on the list for most high school students. But Talia Maselli couldn't imagine anyone more perfect than the Vice President, so seven months ago, she wrote a note to him with an invitation and stuck it in the mail.

She was shocked last Thursday, the eve of her prom, when she got a special delivery -- a wrist corsage and a handwritten note from the Veep himself, expressing his condolences that he wouldn't be able to make it to Connecticut that evening.

The teen wrote, "I am inviting you so far in advance because I'm sure many 17-year-old girls send you prom invitations, and I had to beat them to it ... I could only tolerate a high school dance if I was to be escorted by the most delightful man in America."

She also joked that she'd have to invite Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner if Biden turned her down. She wrote, "And we can't have that now can we."

Since she'd sent the note mostly on a lark, she was convinced that the flowers and note from Joe Biden were a practical joke from a family member. The handwritten letter stated, "I am flattered, but my schedule will not permit me to be in Connecticut on Friday evening ... but I hope you will accept this corsage and enjoy your prom as much as I did mine."

It was only when Talia called the number provided for Biden's assistant that she believed it. The assistant immediately recognized her name and assured her it was for real and that her dream date had picked out the corsage of white roses and patriotic red, white, and blue ribbons himself.

A spokesman for Biden said he was touched by her letter. "He wanted her to feel special at her prom, even though he wasn't able to come," she said.

Talia didn't end up going to her prom, but that's fine by her. "I was never really looking forward to going to prom," Maselli said. "I'm looking forward to going to Washington, D.C."

Of course, she would've made an exception if Biden had agreed to make an appearance. She said, "But if he had said yes, I would have gone."
