Taft High School Shooting Takes Place During Joe Biden's Press Conference on Gun Violence (VIDEO)

taft shootingIt seems like an SNL parody -- Vice President Joe Biden's press conference on gun violence interrupted by an act of gun violence -- but unfortunately, it's true. Today around 12:30 ET, CNN cut away from Biden's talk to cover a school shooting in California. Kern County police suspect it was a student at Taft Union High School in Taft, California, who shot two people this morning on campus.

One student was struck in the upper-right of their chest and was airlifted to Bakersfield hospital. Two others were wounded; a teacher was injured as well as another student who tripped and fell during the chaos.

The school was evacuated and parents were called to come and get their kids. One student called her mom right after the shooting broke out and said there was "blood everywhere." As of now, the alleged shooter is in custody and a shot gun has been apprehended.

I don't know if there's such a thing as copycat violence, but it's hard to look at the acts of gun violence in Tucson, Aurora, Newtown, and now Taft and turn a blind eye to their similarities. Even if all they share is that someone opened fire on a group of innocent people ... the fact that they all used guns should be enough to draw a thick and obvious parallel.

When there can't even be so much as a press conference about gun control without there being a shooting, we've got a problem. Biden called it a "complicated" concern before the Taft news overshadowed him, and I wonder if that slap of reality has changed his perception of the issue.

We won't have to wait long for our answer; we'll find out Tuesday when he delivers his recommendation for comprehensive gun violence legislation just where he puts his feet down. Hopefully something he thought had "no single answer" will be solved in many simple steps, starting with universal background checks.
