5 of Mitt Romney's Biggest 'History Airbrushings' in Monday Night's Debate

Mitt RomneyMitt Romney is notorious at this point for his lies, and during last night's third and final presidential debate between President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Governor Romney, he was at it again. This debate was about foreign policy and Obama wiped the floor with Romney.

Sadly, Romney proved the old adage: Just because you are rich doesn't make you smart. OK, so it's not an "old adage." But it should be. Because in this case? It's true.

One of the best lines of the debate came from Obama when he accused Mitt of "airbrushing history." Here are some of Mitt's biggest (and most disturbing) whoppers from last night's debate:

  • Auto bailout: Romney claimed last night that he supported the auto bailout using government funds to save the auto industry.
  • The truth: Romney DID write an editorial in The New York Times with the headline: "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt." He openly disdained government intervention in private industry and specifically the way the bailout was handled, but when it became apparent that the bailout had worked, Romney tried to claim he had supported it all alone. LIAR! I feel like that old lady from The Princess Bride, but really. Come on. LIAR! Those "guarantees" he supported would have not have been enough to save the industry as there was no private funding available. Taking credit for something he didn't support is just plain tacky.

  • Middle East geography: Romney said: "Syria is Iran's only ally in the Arab world. It's their route to the sea."
  • The truth: Iran sits on the coast and has access to the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It doesn't have a land border with Syria. Now this is just sad.
  • Obama's "Apology Tour": Romney claimed Obama's first trip abroad in his presidency was an "apology tour" to make amends for all of Bush's foreign policy blunders over the years.
  • The truth: Last year, the Washington Post tracked down every "apology" Obama uttered and found that it was simply not true. Obama said no more "I'm sorry"s than George W. Bush before him. So put that in your pipe and smoke it Romney!
  • Navy lie: Romney accused Obama of reducing the Navy to the smallest it has been since World War I.
  • The truth: While perhaps just looking at raw numbers in terms of "ships," one could say Romney didn't lie. In fact, though, experts agree that a decline in the number of ships doesn't automatically mean a weaker Navy. The United States is, has been, and will remain the world's unquestioned military leader thanks to stellar training and cutting edge technology.
  • Terrorism: Mitt Romney claims, "In the 2000 debates, there was no mention of terrorism."
  • The truth: In one of the 2000 debates between Al Gore and George W. Bush, Gore talked about his work in Congress to "deal with the problems of terrorism and these new weapons of mass destruction." Also, in the vice presidential debate, Joe Lieberman defended the Clinton administration's work around terrorism.

Romney needs to stop lying and win based on facts. Meanwhile, those who believe him need to start to read more and get better educated. It's not acceptable to choose a President based on lies and propaganda.

Did you watch the debate? What did you think?
