Romney's 'Binders of Women' Comment Was No Big Deal

romneyThere was a young lady at the presidential debate on Tuesday night that asked the candidates to discuss the mythical wage gap between the genders. Bless her heart; she seemed to not know that the idea that women make less money than men when all things are considered equal has been blown out of the water again and again.

Touting his substantial record on employing women in high-level positions, Mitt Romney said that when he became governor of Massachusetts, he insisted upon seeing resumes from female applicants for his cabinet positions.

He said:

We took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet. I went to a number of women’s groups, and they brought us whole binders full of women.

Queue the polygamy jokes. You know, because it totally matters that Mitt Romney belongs to a religion that outlawed polygamy more than a century ago. Way to keep it relevant, guys!

Anyway, since Team Obama wants to talk about the unequal and unfair treatment of women, let’s go ahead and talk about it.

Since Barack Obama took office, the number of women living in poverty has climbed to a record high 25.7 million. That amounts to 16.3% of American women living in poverty -- the highest rate in seventeen years. Women have been disproportionately affected by Obama’s economy, and he is trying to convince voters that he cares about women.

In Obama’s world, caring must mean something different than it does in mine, because he pays his female staffers significantly less than their male counterparts. Women that work for Obama have complained about a “hostile workplace,” and being made to feel like “a piece of meat.”

Meanwhile, Mitt Romney employed more females in top state positions in Massachusetts than any other governor, and he worked with them on flexible scheduling so they could spend more time with their families. Heck, he even helped Cindy Gillespie move into her house when she took a job on his staff after having worked with him for the Salt Lake City Olympics.

It’s silly for President Obama to attack Mitt Romney for having binders full of women’s resumes. He probably needed those binders because the GOP has so many qualified females that it was the only way to keep them all organized.
