‘Bad News Bears’ Star Dies in Car Accident

sammi kane kraftFans of the 2005 remake of Bad News Bears are mourning one of the hit's most memorable stars. Sammi Kane Kraft was killed in a car accident in Los Angeles Tuesday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the actress died after the Audi she was a passenger in hit a truck around 1:35 a.m. The vehicle was reportedly traveling at a "high rate of speed" when it rear-ended the big rig and then was struck by another car.

Kraft made her mark in Hollywood playing tomboy Amanda Whurlitzer, a role originated by Tatum O'Neal in 1976. Unlike many of the other child stars in the film, she was actually a real athlete. Director Richard Linklater cast her as a pitcher after she threw a 75 mph fastball during her audition. Apparently, she had been a star pitcher since age 8 and her family even moved from New York to California so she could play all year round.

Bad News Bears was her only film role, but she never gave up performing. Studying music in college, she played in a band called Scary Girls, which announced plans to shoot a video just last week. The driver of the car, Molly Kate Adams, avoided serious injury and was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving. Kraft was later pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

It's such a tragic end to a young life. But how many times have we heard this kind of story before, yet people still get behind the wheel after drinking. It just seems that drunk driving laws aren't enough of a deterrent anymore. Or perhaps they never were.
