Man Hands Out Money on His 57th Birthday & Doesn't Even Seem Crazy (VIDEO)

birthday cash giveaway

I hate to be cynical, but I don't think you get anything in this life for free. So when I heard news reports about a North Carolina man who stood in the middle of a busy intersection handing out $5 bills on the street, I thought, "What's this guy up to?"

Oh, this 65-year-old was up to something all right, but nothing close to what the jaded New Yorker in me imagined.

Bill Blackley held up a signing reading,

I have a job. I have a home. Could YOU use an extra $5?

No doubt drivers and passersby were surprised. Usually when a guy is holding up a piece of cardboard on the street, he's asking for money, not giving fistfuls of it away. But that is exactly what the retired special education teacher was doing -- with the money he got for his birthday, no less.

Gifted with $285 from his wife, "I wanted to do something cool on my birthday," he said. "A lot of people have asked that take the money, 'What do I have to do?' I say, 'You gotta take it out of my hand.'"

After he gave all he had away, his wife handed over even more to dole out. Who says Santa Claus isn't real! OK, maybe handing out fives doesn't make you St. Nick, but that’s a lot more generosity than most people demonstrate these days. And no -- he isn't nuts (at least I don’t think so). It’s nice to see someone paying it forward -- literally.

If you had extra cash, would you give it away to total strangers?
