Pat Robertson's Latest Crackpot Advice: Turn Muslim & Beat Your Wife (VIDEO)

Pat RobertsonI'll say this for Pat Robertson. We don't hear much from the 82-year-old televangelist these days, but when we do, it's more or less guaranteed to tip the idiot scales (you do remember him blaming the September 11th attacks on the gays, right?). His latest bit of backward thinking hits on two hot topics sure to leave you shaking your head: Muslims and a man's right to beat his wife.

See, Robertson was on The 700 Club fielding a marital dilemma question from a man named Michael who said he didn't feel his wife "respected him" as "head of the house." Naturally Robertson was feeling this man's pain.

No surprise there: here's a guy who has lost the respect of most of America with his outlandish antics over the years -- from that September 11th doozy to the time he blamed Hurricane Katrina deaths on abortions. Of course he was all over this.

But it's how Robertson responded that will make your eyes bug out. The so-called Christian suggested the man could "become a Muslim and beat her." He should have quit while he was already behind, but Robertson kept on, insisting that a man's:

Gotta stand up to her, and he can’t let her get away with this stuff. And you know ... I don’t think we condone wife-beating these days, but something’s gotta be done to make her—

That's when the show's co-host Terry Meeuwsen tried to jump in and divert Robertson from talking about physical violence, but the fact remains: we have a still popular (for God knows what reason) pastor who sat on national TV advocating domestic violence.

Not only that, he did it while insulting an entire religion! I could get into an entire debate over what the Quran actually says about marriage and a man's ability to beat his spouse, but I'm going to beg off. That's for scholars with a deeper knowledge of this religion to debate. So I will say only that there are many Muslims who believe that such acts are wrong.

As do most Americans. At least, they should ... especially pastors who claim to be spreading the word of Jesus Christ, a man who is perhaps best known for the concept of "turning the other cheek." Because, like it or not, people are still listening to people like Pat Robertson, still turning to them as a voice of "moral authority" because of their association with a church. If they're putting a stamp of approval on antediluvian thinking, we have a real problem in America.

Assault is wrong. Period. End of story. It doesn't matter if it's within a marriage or between perfect strangers, two people should always have enough respect for one another's humanity not to resort to violence. There's a reason the cops get involved with domestic violence situations ... because it's illegal!

Pat Roberton's problems with Islam aside, his "a man's gotta get whip that woman into shape" thinking should push him off the air for good.

Do you believe anything that comes out of that man's mouth anymore?
