Mom Wants to Watch Her 9-Year-Old Daughter’s Killer Die: Will You Help Her?

lethal injection control panel Some 22 years ago, Donald Moeller raped and murdered 9-year-old Becky O'Connell on her trip to a convenience store to buy candy. And now her mom, Tina Curl, 50, is planning to travel from her home in New York to South Dakota where the guy is waiting to be executed to get a front row seat. To which I say, go for it Mrs. Curl. If this is what you need to get closure or satisfaction or revenge or whatever for what was so brutally stolen from you, go for it. Except Tina Curl doesn't have the thousands of dollars needed to make the trip, so she's started a fundraiser asking for donations. To which I say ... [pause] ... I'm not sure what I say.

This is a tricky one. I have nothing but sympathy and support for Curl and the pain she's obviously endured all these years, and I have nothing but contempt for the man who would do this to an innocent little girl. Let him rot in hell, however he gets there, the sooner the better.

So why would I be so hesitant to donate to her cause? And why would so many other people who feel the same way I do withhold their dollars as well? Curl has only raised $890 from donations at a bank and at a local bar. You would think because this involves a murdered child, she'd be getting a much stronger response, right?

Curl speculated in an interview with ABC that people may be putting her down because she's asking for money (even though she's on disability and can barely make ends meet) or because they disagree with the death penalty. I don't think that's 100 percent it, though. Donating to her cause would not necessarily mean support of the death penalty, it's just helping a poor suffering mom out.

I think this just feels, for lack of a better word, dark. And a little off? Helping someone fund a trip to "watch someone die," no matter how horrible they are, is just not something everyone, even those who support the death penalty, would want to be involved in even in an indirect way. Because it some way, it means we are watching them too.

I can't imagine what Curl must have gone through all her life and I want to help her, I really do. I'm sure lots of other people do, too. I just wish there was another way.

Would you donate money so this mom could see her daughter's killer executed?
