A Woman Hasn't Moderated a Presidential Debate in 20 Years!

candy crowleyScore one for feminism today: A WOMAN has finally been tapped to moderate a presidential debate. CNN's Candy Crowley will moderate the second debate, set for October 16 in Hempstead, New York. And if you're scratching your head right now and saying, "So?" this is news because a woman hasn't moderated a presidential debate in 20 years!

And guess who helped make it happen? Emma Axelrod, Elena Tsemberis, and Sammi Siegel, three teenagers from Montclair, New Jersey who created a Change.com petition that went viral earlier this year: It's Time for a Woman Moderator. Girl power! Because maybe most men can lift heavier things, but there's no way in hell that they're any better at moderating a debate than women are. Asking questions? That's what we women DO, honey.

Carole Simpson moderated a debate back in 1992. Candy Crowley hosts the Sunday morning CNN program State of the Union, so she's more than qualified. There's a hitch, though: She won't actually be asking the questions. She'll be moderating a town hall-style debate with audience-submitted questions. Whatsamatter, don't we trust a woman to do that? Or does the Commission on Presidential Debates think Candy's questions will be just a little too probing? Ooh, feminism, we came so close.

When I first heard "20 years since the last female moderator," I thought of Gwen Ifill -- didn't she ...? Nope. Gwen Ifill moderated a vice presidential debate last time, as later immortalized in an SNL skit featuring Queen Latifah and Tina Fey. (Hooray, another excuse to watch it for the 100th time!) We'll have a female moderator for the VP debate this year, too. ABC's Martha Raddatz will moderate the VP debate between Biden and Ryan on October 11.

A quick look at Twitter shows me that conservatives are already making fat jokes at Crowley's expense, which their wives, girlfriends, sisters, mothers, and daughters must just love. Well done there, sexist turds. Can you possibly imagine the same kinds of jokes ever being made about a male debate moderator? Hopefully they'll get it out of their system soon so we can all move on to the serious work of the election.

Are you surprised that it's been 20 years since a woman last moderated a presidential debate?
