Basketball Player Chris 'Birdman' Anderson Investigated by Child Crimes Unit (VIDEO)

chris andersonSo here's an unhappy tale to horrify you through the weekend: Denver Nuggets player Chris "Birdman" Anderson's home is being investigated by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force of Colorado. He's been under investigation since February and today they got a warrant to cart stuff out of his home.

BUT! It might not be a horrible case of real sicko child pornography. I mean, it looks bad, and if he's really been up to something nefarious I hope they nail his ass. But a few details have leaked out that suggest this case might not be as horrible as it sounds.

Anderson's lawyer, Colin Bresee released a statement to the Denver Post that suggests this could be a case of extortion by a young woman.

A female fan in 2010 mailed Mr. Andersen multiple letters and included several photos in which she was scantily clad. Chris and this woman communicated with each other and in 2011, this woman, who represented herself as 21 years of age, flew to Colorado, showing her required identification. After leaving Colorado, she became upset at his lack of interest. In 2012, she threatened to retaliate if he did not provide financial remuneration.

And Bresee also leaked an email allegedly from the girl/woman's mother, saying "i (sic) want him to pay for everything on her Amazon wish list, 5K for her bedding stuff and her victoria secret wish list." (Cough smoking gun cough)

Okay, so it sounds like an underage girl/woman tried to seduce Birdman. It worked, and then it didn't, and she is now getting him for "child" pornography. Which would be... sleazy.

I'm kind of hoping this is what's actually going on. It does sound kind of like one of those whoppers men tell when they get into trouble. ("I thought she was 21!" We've heard that a million times.) But having pictures of a 17-year-old is WAY different from having pictures of a 7-year-old. Birdman hasn't been arrested or charged with anything yet.

For everyone's sake I hope Birdman has been involved in mere doofusery, not actual real, god-awful child pornography. And if someone is taking up the Task Force's time and resources on an extortion case -- when the Task Force could be working on real child exploitation case -- that would be the real crime.
