Parking Lot Murder-Suicide Claims Mom & Dad as Toddler Waits Just Feet Away

crime tapeIt's a tragic term, but by definition, a murder-suicide should be easy for police to solve. The murderer's gone already. But the discovery of a toddler in a car just feet from where a man killed his ex-girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself in the parking lot of a San Jose strip mall over the weekend is a grim reminder that the shooter's suicide doesn't begin to solve the problems he created.

Police aren't saying much about what happened Saturday morning, except to assure residents that this was an isolated incident involving just the man and his ex-girlfriend. Sadly, it's not that simple. True: the good news is there's no murderer on the loose in San Jose. The horrible news is that the 17-month-old girl found strapped in her car seat in a silver BMW is now an orphan.

It turns out those dead adults were her parents. She's alive. She's healthy.

But I'd say that makes her the third victim of this murder-suicide, wouldn't you? This poor kid has to spend the rest of her life without her parents. On top of that, she'll likely spend it knowing that her father was a murderer, and a murderer who killed her mom, specifically. Oh, she's just 17 months, but who knows what she saw and/or what she will remember as she gets older. Even those of us who had happy-go-lucky childhoods have flashes of moments from long, long ago. Now imagine going through horrific trauma as a kid. That's the kind of memory that could haunt you for a lifetime.

So much for this being something the cops can say is isolated to just these two people. Like most violent crime, the murder-suicide of two people reaches beyond them to everyone in their individual families, including their daughter and beyond.

What do the words "murder-suicide" bring to mind for you?
