Disgusting Dad Shakes Baby to Death for Distracting Him During Video Game

jacob hartleyThere's no silver lining around this terrible story. A man in Florida is being accused of shaking his 3-week-old son to death after the infant wouldn't stop crying. Apparently, the newborn's wails were distracting dad Jacob Hartley while playing video games. Hartley allegedly couldn't take it anymore, and admitted to police that he used two hands to shake his son. Hartley, 20, had gotten home that night from working at Sam's Club and was playing Xbox until 4 a.m., when his son's crying began.

It was the baby's mother who discovered her infant lifeless about two hours after the incident, blood coming from his nose and mouth. The father is being charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child.

Honestly, what is this world coming to? When a man kills his baby because he didn't want to be interrupted while playing video games, isn't that some sort of sign that there's something seriously wrong in our society? When video games become more important, more valued, and more beloved than one's 3-week-old child, yes, I think that means something is terribly, terribly wrong.

That's not all, though. Apparently, detectives discovered that Hartley shook his son when he was 2 weeks old, too. I'm not sure why he wasn't arrested then, or if the cops even knew about it, but clearly Hartley's rage was a ticking time bomb for his innocent son.

I know I said there was no silver lining, and while I don't really think that an eye for an eye should be considered any sort of "bright side", I have to admit that I do take a bit of comfort in the fact that criminals who harm children usually have the roughest go of it on the cell block.

My heart goes out to the deceased baby and his mother -- I can't imagine what she's going through. I bet she'll never look at a video game the same way again. And I don't blame her.

What do you think should be Hartley's punishment?
