Mitt Romney's Planned Parenthood Threats Reek of Desperation

mitt romneyWe all knew that calling Mitt Romney a "fan" of Planned Parenthood would be a stretch, but did any of us think that if he -- God forbid -- took office, he'd do away with the organization altogether? Yeah, well, apparently, he will.

As a response to a question about cutting the deficit yesterday, the GOP candidate said: "Of course you get rid of Obamacare, that's the easy one, but there are others -- Planned Parenthood, we're going to get rid of that."

That's right. Mitt Romney -- who sought the endorsement of Planned Parenthood while running for governor of Massachusetts in 2002 -- now wants to get rid of it. Or so he says. Pardon me for a moment while I roll up my tongue and pick my jaw up off of the floor.

I think we all know what's happening here. Mitt's getting desperate. With Santorum and his ultra-conservative ways trailing shorty behind him, Romney's pulling out all the stops to get the super staunch Republican votes -- and Planned Parenthood is, of course, an Achilles heel. Thing is, though, obviously such a ridiculous exclamation of epic proportions is going to piss off a few people, so Romney's people tried to do damage control by explaining that he was talking about cutting federal funding for the women's health organization, not getting rid of it completely. Ohhhh ...

You know, sometimes I really am shocked at all of the general disdain and outrage toward Planned Parenthood. It's such an incredibly hot button issue and the mere mention of it seems to drive people into a tizzy. People like to paint Planned Parenthood as an abortion factory, if you will, when in fact, that's not the case at all. Planned Parenthood provides affordable health care for women without insurance, or women who simply don't have a lot of money. Procedures like cancer screenings and prevention are a huge chunk of what Planned Parenthood does -- not abortions. And I really don't see why any candidate -- or person -- wouldn't want to support that.

Do you support Mitt Romney's decision to "defund" Planned Parenthood?
