The Working Class Needs Roseanne Barr to Run for President

roseanne barrAt last, a candidate I can truly get behind! Roseanne Barr announced her run for the Green Party's presidential nomination today, and I can't think of a single politician more uniquely qualified for the position. Think about it: What this country needs is a true Working Class Hero, a candidate who represents the complete and total opposite of Mitt Romney, Wealthy Male Republican.

Roseanne fits that bill better than anyone.

Romney doesn't have the vaguest idea what defines the average American experience; Roseanne knew the reality of the "American dream" so well she built a successful comedy empire around it.

There's no question that Romney is out of touch, but, just for kicks, let's take a look at his recent comments regarding the "very poor" ...

And how he's "not concerned" about them. Well, why would he be? I doubt he's ever even seen a "very poor" person up close in real life. For all the second-generation millionaire knows, the very poor are nothing more than a myth, the stuff of legend. Sort of like leprechauns (except without the pots of gold, obviously).

Roseanne Barr has been poor. She's been rich. She's been in the middle.

She was born to a working class family in Utah and was raised -- interestingly -- both Jewish and Mormon. At the age of 16, she was hit by a car and suffered a severe brain injury; as a result, she was institutionalized for 8 months. She gave up a child for adoption at the age of 17. She was a Hollywood star. Most recently, she ran a macadamia nut and livestock farm in Hawaii. Is there any variation on American life that Roseanne Barr can't speak to?

Romney thinks he's looking out for the working class, but what he doesn't realize is that the line between "working class" and "very poor" is fading fast. Romney and his kind have no understanding of what it is to be anything other than rich. Period.

Which is why I welcome the idea of Roseanne Barr running for office. As she put it in a Green Party questionnaire:

"I will barnstorm American living rooms. Mainstream media will be unable to ignore me, but more importantly they will be unable to overlook the needs of average Americans in the run-up to the 2012 election."

Roseanne for president!

Would you vote for Roseanne Barr?
