The Free Market Will Take Care of Google

googleSome Google users may have noticed a slight change the past couple of weeks, as the search engine giant began altering results pages to include information from Google+. Results do not include hits from other social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or MySpace. 

As expected, the people behind those sites aren’t pleased. Actually, the people behind MySpace were thrilled to be included in that list at all, since they had thought themselves irrelevant outside the world of indie bands and adult movie stars.

Google’s ‘don’t be evil’ unofficial motto has been turned against them by Internet users upset with Google’s shameless self-promotion. Advocacy group FairSearch.org even went so far as to call Google a bully.

So what? It’s a free country, isn’t it? No one is forcing anyone to search for videos of adorable laughing babies on Google. Why not try Yahoo, Bing, or Ask? As soon as Google sees its traffic decrease, it will fix things to make its users happy. Without customers, a business is doomed to fail. Without viewers, a website is doomed to fail. 

The free market kind of rocks like that.

Speaking of the free market and Google’s social network domineering, a website called Focus on the User has come up with a “bookmarklet” that strips Google search results of any bias toward Google+. The best part is that they do it on Google’s own relevance metrics. “The results speak for themselves,” the Focus on the User site explains.

We created a tool that uses Google’s own relevance measure -- the ranking of their organic search results -- to determine what social content should appear.

See? The free market is self-correcting.

Of course, the real question in all of this is: Will Google’s attempt to make Google+ the hip new social networking site work? I’m thinking no. See y’all on Twitter.
