Disgusting Gym Uses Nazi Death Camp Photo to Sell Memberships (PHOTO)

the circuit factory dubaiGyms all over the world are on overdrive trying to capitalize on New Year's resolutions, and The Circuit Factory in Dubai might seem no different. But in an attempt to stir up business, the gym posted a series of 10 photo ads on Facebook ... and one ad is pretty much the most horrendous, disgusting, repulsive, nightmarish things I've laid my eyes on. EVER. It makes me want to sit down and cry.

In the ad, the gym used an image of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz with the caption, "Kiss your calories goodbye." Oh. My. God. Can you even friggin' BELIEVE this?!! Making matters so much worse: Although they've removed the loathsome ad and apologized, the gym's founder, Phil Parkinson, has whined that the controversy surrounding the ad has garnered so much attention and new business for the gym that "it has got to the point [he is] nervous that [he] can't cater for demand." What the hell?!!?

Here's the ad as it appeared on Facebook ...

Circuit Factory Dubai Auschwitz ad from Facebook

Absolutely horrific, disgraceful ... what I fear most here is that this isn't just a one-off incident. This is a sign of a much bigger problem.

The Anti-Defamation League's attention was brought to the case, and here's what they had to say about it ...

We are increasingly troubled by both the ignorance and mindset of a generation that appears to be so distant from a basic understanding of the Holocaust that it seems acceptable to use this horrific tragedy as a gimmick to bring attention to promoting losing weight.

BINGO! As an American Jew, I worry that the history lessons in our schools aren't sufficient. In my U.S. or European History classes, I remember plenty of talk about the Renaissance or Civil War, but don't recall our lessons covering more than perhaps a quick mention of the Holocaust in relation to WWII. It's like they figured we'd been over it in English class by reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry or Night by Elie Wiesel. Who the hell knows what's going on in classrooms abroad or wherever these Circuit Factory jackasses grew up?

Obviously, this is a piece of our international history that has, to some degree, fallen by the wayside, and that's nothing short of terrifying given how it's a chapter that should be ingrained in every human being for years to come. As George Santayana said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Unless we're interested in living to see another era in which hate and fear lead to the murder of millions of humans, the brand of blatant ignorance and nonchalance exhibited by this gym -- and eerily, perhaps an entire generation, as the ADL pointed out -- cannot be tolerated. I'm not sure what can actually be done given Dubai law, but The Circuit Factory deserves more than a slap on the wrist for their repulsive display.

Do you think the gym should be punished for the ad? Do you agree we're not teaching future generations enough about WWII and the Holocaust?
