Anti-Abortionists' Pink Bible Protest Hurts Breast Cancer Patients

breast cancer bibleOnce again, here come politics and misinformation to wreck something potentially amazing! A group called LifeWay Christian Resources has recalled a pink "Here's Hope Breast Cancer Bible," meant for breast cancer patients, because protesters worried some of the proceeds might be funding abortion services. See, $1 of the $24.99 spent on each bible -- which has been on sale since Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- went to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, but protesters flipped out over Komen for the Cure affiliates giving grants to Planned Parenthood to provide breast cancer services, like mammograms. We all know many pro-lifers think Planned Parenthood is all about abortions. (Even though abortions make up just 3 percent of their services.)

In fact, some of the pro-lifers are so convinced that Planned Parenthood is pure evil that they told people that buying the bible would be a "donation to death." Ugh!

How 'bout we do a little reality check?

The truth here is that Komen for the Cure organization states, "Under no circumstances are Komen funds used to fund abortions and other non-breast services." In other words, there's absolutely no direct link between the proceeds from the bible and any kind of abortion service. The funds would help women prevent breast cancer with annual screenings -- that is it.

Sadly, this doesn't seem to matter to those who fought to get the bible removed from shelves. They've already made up their minds about where the money's going and what Planned Parenthood is all about -- facts be damned!

The President of Lifeway, Thomas Rainer, explained himself:

Though we have assurances that Komen's funds are used only for breast cancer screening and awareness, it is not in keeping with LifeWay's core values to have even an indirect relationship with Planned Parenthood.

What a shame ... based strictly on false information touted by politician and idealogical differences that aren't even on the table in this case, the company is pulling these bibles and taking away money from the most influential breast cancer awareness group in the country. It's really very sad to see that it has come down to this.

As a consolation, LifeWay did pledge $25K to "breast cancer programs" (they better make sure to vet those to see that they're all just about the breasts and not about any other part of a woman!) ... but that's just not good enough. Perhaps even more women could have gotten mammograms and life-saving care, but they won't now, due only to LifeWay and anti-abortionists' close-mindedness, short-sightedness, and blind hatred for Planned Parenthood.

Do you think it was wrong for LifeWay to recall their pink bibles?
