Apple Doesn't Have to Help You Find an Abortion Clinic

siri abortionSiri is the super fun new feature on the iPhone 4S. Basically, you can ask your phone a question, any question, and it will immediately search the Internet for your answer. You can all tell it to schedule appoints on your calendar, text or call people, or find a nearby porn shop

It might even get men to start asking for directions, just because it’s so cool to ask Siri and have it come back immediately with a usable answer.

But there’s one thing Siri won’t do for you: Help you get an abortion. When asked to find nearby abortion clinics, Siri responds that there are none nearby, even if you happen to be standing directly in front of a Planned Parenthood. Some users even reported being directed to crisis pregnancy centers.

Obviously, Siri is a pro-life punk.

Natalie Kerris, a spokeswoman for Apple, made a statement, saying that Siri does not yet have all the kinks ironed out:

Our customers want to use Siri to find out all types of information, and while it can find a lot, it doesn’t always find what you want. These are not intentional omissions meant to offend anyone. It simply means that as we bring Siri from beta to a final product, we find places where we can do better, and we will in the coming weeks.

If Ms. Kerris speaks the truth, I suspect that the malfunction has to do with the fact that the word abortion is rarely used when referring to actual abortion. Pro-choice, Planned Parenthood, products of conception, family planning ... no ‘A’ word to be found.

Or maybe it was intentional. Maybe Steve Jobs (who was adopted, by the way) kept his sense of humor in his final days and found a way to mess with people from beyond the grave. Who knows?

Intentional or not, does it matter? Apple is a private company and should not be forced to provide information on abortion clinics if it doesn’t want to. No one’s forced to buy an iPhone 4S, after all.
