5 Weird Meanings of 11/11/11

11/11/11Depending on what you believe, the day you've been waiting for, or the day you've been dreading, has finally arrived: It's 11/11/11. Most people, like my cousin who scheduled her C-section for today or the thousands who've flocked to Vegas to tie the knot, are under the assumption that today is a lucky day, since, apparently, repetitive numbers are associated with good fortune. Remember all the hoopla surrounding 7/7/07? And 6/6/06 -- oh wait, not all repetitive numbers are lucky. But 11/11/11 is. In fact, it's even more special than 7/7/07; to some, at least.

Tania Gabrielle, a practitioner of numerology, says that today is a good time to start business ventures or relationships, because the number one signifies a beginning; while others, like those who think the number is tied to the Mayan Apocalypse, feel 11/11/11 is actually unlucky. So, what gives? To be honest, I really have no idea. But here are five weird meanings behind 11/11/11.

The Mayan Apocalypse. Okay, let's start with the most interesting one -- the one that involves death and destruction. Apparently, the ancient Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012, and some believe that this date will usher in a new spiritual era or, conversely, a doomsday. According to John Hoopes, a scholar of Mayan history at the University of Kansas, November 11, 2011 became linked with this date, most likely, when believers noticed that the U.S. Naval Observatory had set the exact time of the 2012 winter solstice for 11:11 Universal Time on December 21. But he also added, "If it seems like the 2012 mythology was thought up by people on drugs, it's because it was."

Luck in love. Other, more optimistic folk feel that the triple number signifies love and all things gushy and sweet. About 1,000 ethnic Chinese couples exchanged vows in Malaysia today, as it's viewed as auspicious and romantic. "The numbers rhyme with one husband, one wife, and one soul in Chinese and signifies a marriage that would last a lifetime," said nurse Pua Kim Giok, 25, who wed engineer Lee Chin Siong, 27.

Cosmic forces will destroy the world. Officials in Egypt made the decision to close the pyramids today due to complaints over a planned 11/11/11 ceremony that was to take place there. The country's Supreme Council of Antiquities had planned to allow a Polish numerologist group called Dar Swiatowida to gather on-site and fight the “cosmic forces” that were to destroy the world next year. (The council changed its mind after protests.) The group wanted to host a “Ceremony of Love” among the pyramids, which, supposedly, entailed putting “two interpenetrated pyramid-shaped crystals” inside the Great Pyramid.

A cosmic wake-up call. Numerologists really like this day. Vikki MacKinnon, a numerologist in Canada, feels that today will be a "cosmic wake-up call." She revealed, "Eleven is a number of illumination and enlightenment, a number of insight, blinding flashes of the obvious, and a number of transformation."

A day to honor corduroy. Clearly, the world doesn't pay homage to this fine fabric often enough, so what better day than today? The three 11s look like lines -- AKA corduroy -- so some believe that today is the day to dust off that old pair of pants from J.Crew in honor of corduroy.

As for me, well, I still don't know what I believe about today. Truth be told, not much. I'm not really one for superstitions, so I'm going to say that physics professor Eric Carlson's theory makes the most sense: People are simply drawn to repetitive numbers because "our brains are just pattern-matching machines." Yeah, I'm going to go with that.

Do you think today is lucky or unlucky?
