Obama Promises Troops Will Be 'Home for the Holidays' (VIDEO)

obamaThe "most wonderful time of the year" came early today for thousands of military families when President Obama spoke the following words on live TV: "Today I can say that our troops in Iraq will definitely be home for the holidays."

I can't even begin to imagine the incredible sense of overjoyed relief that swept through living rooms across the country when Obama announced the confirmation of plans to have all U.S. troops home by January 1, 2012.

I don't have any close relatives serving in the military, so I haven't had the bittersweet experience of trying to make the holidays as festive as possible for my family despite the glaring absence of a beloved dad or mom or brother or sister. I'm fortunate in that respect. Still, my heart has always broken for those separated from their loved ones during the holiday season.

Naturally, Obama's announcement would have made countless Americans enormously happy no matter what time of year he made it. But the fact that the troops' homecoming will coincide with the holidays makes it all the more poignant.
