Zachary Quinto Inspires News Anchor to Come Out on Air (VIDEO)

dan kloefflerWhen Zachary Quinto came out as a gay man during an interview with New York Magazine, some people were surprised, others couldn't have cared less, and a few were inspired. To come out themselves. On national television.

ABC World News Now reporter Dan Kloeffler nonchalantly revealed himself to be homosexual on Monday while reporting on the earth-shattering news about the Star Trek hottie. After a segment about Quinto ran, Kloeffler quipped to his co-anchor, "I'm thinking I can lose my distraction about dating actors."

Kloeffler was out to his friends and family, but it was the first time he revealed his sexual orientation to his audience. And he did it for the same reason Zachary did -- he didn't want to hide any longer.

After the broadcast, Kloeffler wrote on his blog:

I’ve never shared that I’m gay on-air, even though I’ve been out to my family, friends, and co-workers for years. In fact, an old boyfriend -- now best friend -- has always given me a hard time about not doing so. But for the same reason that Zach decided to come out, I too, no longer wanted to hide this part of my life.

He added, "As a journalist, I don’t want to be the story, but as a gay man, I don’t want to stand silent if I can offer some inspiration or encouragement to kids that might be struggling with who they are.”

You know, when Zachary Quinto first came out, I have to be honest, I was one of those people who really couldn't have cared less. "Big whoop," I thought. "He prefers dudes over girls. What's for dinner?" But then I realized that it actually is a big whoop -- to other people who are scared to be who they really are. It's only days later, and Zachary is already serving as an inspiration for other people -- other people on TV, no less -- to come out and live proud.

I'm really glad Kloeffler came out on his show -- and I love how he did it so casually. Maybe he'll now inspire someone else.
