Child Killer Gets More Compassion From Victim's Family Than Anyone Else

Joshua Komisarjevsky is a disgusting excuse for a human being who broke into a family home, molested, tortured and killed them and then tried to blame them for their own murders in his defense by claiming that the only surviving victim's escape was the reason he had to kill the others.

He does not even deserve to have our hatred, let alone our compassion or empathy. No one would blame the surviving victim -- Dr. William Petit -- one bit if he hated this man and wanted to kill him. But Petit -- who was beaten and left tied in the basement during the home invasion -- has not shown his rage, at least not in public. As much as he may have wanted to beat the men who tortured, raped and murdered his wife and two young daughters, he has maintained his composure.

It says a lot about who he is and what justice means for this family. Dr. Petit said the reason he has been so composed is his wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit. He said he knows how horrified she would have been if he acted rageful or inhuman.

He has turned his pain into helping others, starting a foundation and sitting at the trial day after day, supporting and loving his girls the only way he can now.

His daughters, Michaela, 11 and Hayley, 17, were lucky to have Dr. Petit as a father. He is the type of human we should all aspire to be -- calm, intelligent, loving. Few of us know how we would respond to a tragedy of this proportion, but I bet few of us would react the way the Hawkes and Petits have.

Apparently at some point in the trial, the father of Jennifer Hawke Petit went up to Komisarjevsky's father and said: "I am sorry you have to go through this." Who does that?

In many ways it makes it all the more sad. Clearly these were girls who were going to do great things. They clearly had a wonderful support system and a family that would have been there for them in every way. But their father is working tirelessly to make sure their legacy is not lost. Even though they are dead, he is still maintaining his love for them and his love for the world.

Because of this, other people will have better lives. He could not save his family, but he has changed lives just by being who he is. The Petit family murders terrify us all, but what Dr. Petit has done since is nothing short of miraculous. This is the kind of person we should all aspire to be.

Does his composure impress you?
