Mom Forced to Give Birth in Minivan After Hospital Turns Her Away (VIDEO)

baby born in minivanA Wisconsin couple, Rebecca Herrick and Shawn Lewer, were super excited when Rebecca started having contractions, so they rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, doctors told her she had to wait a little longer before she could start pushing, it was a false alarm of sorts, and suggested the couple go home and come back the next day when things had progressed. On their way home, though, things started to get a little ... intense. Rebecca's contractions were now only two minutes apart, and there was no time to waste. None!

So Shawn made a U-ey and headed back to the hospital. Shawn was yelling at Rebecca not to push, and she was yelling back that she couldn't help it, and next thing you know, they're really wishing they had installed the car seat last weekend because BAM: Baby was born in their minivan.

Ack! Baby on board! Shawn was driving, Rebecca was pushing, and little Elijah James was born weighing 8 pounds, 2 ounces in the passenger seat. Shawn didn't stop driving the whole time -- Rebecca did this all on her own. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

When they got to the hospital, the doctors were waiting for them. They cut the cord in the van and took the baby one way and Rebecca the other. They were reunited soon after, and Rebecca cooed that her baby is perfect. Smiley face!

I'm sure Elijah will enjoy telling his dramatic birthday story for the rest of his life, and in a few years, he'll be really thankful that his parents weren't crazy and named him Dodge or Chrysler or Van (although that is a name) or Driver or something, you know, a bit literal.

It's so great to hear that everyone's doing well now and that the three of them are all home and happy. Wonder how they got there, though. I mean, was that van even drivable after what had happened? I kid (mostly).

Shawn says he learned something valuable from this whole experience. Next time, he says, they're staying in the hospital no matter what they say.

Congrats to the happy family!
