Gabrielle Giffords' 'Interview' With Diane Sawyer Is a Total Sham

gabrielle giffordsABC News announced Monday that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (and her husband Space Shuttle Commander Mark Kelly) would "share their remarkable story for the first time since the tragic shootings in Tucson, Arizona," with Diane Sawyer on November 14. So, of course, you know what that meant: Everyone and their mother assumed that Giffords was going to sit for an on-air interview with Sawyer, and the Internet went crazy with reports of "Giffords' first TV interview ..." etcetera, etcetera.

There's only one teeny tiny problem that Giffords' spokesperson revealed some hours later: The congresswoman actually has not agreed to conduct an on-air interview; she may, but that won't be decided until closer to the date.

While it's true that there will be an ABC special with Giffords and Kelly in some capacity (to coincide with the release of her memoir, Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope), to promote it as an "interview" -- at least, at this exact point in time -- is a sham.

Now, I love Diane Sawyer and would love to see her interview Giffords; but you've really got to wonder about a network that seems to be misleading viewers by building buzz around an interview that hasn't yet been confirmed. It's true ABC News didn't technically use the word "interview" in its press release promoting the special; but one could only assume that was the case given the "share their remarkable story for the first time ..." verbiage above. And calling it a "broadcast exclusive" only served to lead us in the wrong direction even more.

And what's even worse is the statement the network sent to POLITICO when asked to clarify:

Both Rep. Giffords and Mr. Kelly will be participating in the special, but given the nature of her injuries and recovery, the congresswoman’s exact participation can only be known as we move forward. The special will fully and respectfully document Giffords’ remarkable road to recovery with her husband by her side and will include dozens of hours of video tape that document that journey.

For the love of all things clear and transparent, don't make announcements and statements until you can accurately define "participating" already! At the end of the day, I really hope this happens -- but in the meantime, I can't take all the teasing.

Are you annoyed with ABC for acting like it has an interview with Giffords when it doesn't yet?
