Brave Homeless Man Saves Two Toddlers From a Burning Building

firefighter burning buildingI'll say this about Jeffrey Richards -- he certainly was in the right place at the right time.

The 40-year-old homeless man was riding his bike past a New York apartment Thursday afternoon, when he spotted two young children trapped in a burning building two floors up. As you can imagine, the boys, ages 3 and 5, were absolutely terrified. Still, I don't know if I would have had the courage to do what Richards did next ...

He climbed the porch and got up onto an awning hanging over the front door. From there, he was able to grab the youngest boy through the window and lower him safely to the people standing below. However, at that point, the awning became too hot for Richards to stand it, and he had to jump off. The second boy was then placed on the awning, and it dropped to the ground. Richards pulled him from the flames, too.

What makes this story so amazing is how selfless and quick-thinking Richards was in rescuing these two boys whom he had no connection to and had never met. We always hope that in an emergency, our neighbors will do right by us, and this is one of those instances that gives us warm fuzzy feelings about the human race.

Of course, this story doesn't have a happy ending just yet. The two young boys have been hospitalized because of the injuries they sustained. A teenager, a 60-year-old man who leaped from the building and landed head-first on the ground, and another adult are in the hospital as well. Hopefully, they will all recover.

And as for Richards? He acted like a true hero and hopefully there is some reward for him when all is said and done.
