Giant Blimp Crash in the Backyard Gives 94-Year-Old the Surprise of Her Life

blimpLillian Bernhagen thought she was going to wake up to what most people wake up to each morning: A hot pot of coffee. But instead she got a blimp.

The 94-year-old Worthington, Ohio resident was sound asleep when a giant blimp featuring the words "Hangar Vodka" landed in her backyard in the middle of the night. She heard the noise, but decided to go back to sleep. The next morning, she awoke to cops banging on her door.

Apparently the blimp, which was 128 feet long, broke free of its moorings at a Columbus airport in Ohio because of strong winds and sailed off into the sky, landing in Lillian Bernhagen's backyard two miles away. No one was aboard and no injuries were reported.

Can you imagine that? A blimp landing in your backyard? I can. 'Cause it actually happened to me, too.

Okay, fine, it wasn't a blimp, it was a giant hot air balloon, but it was just as cool. In fact, cooler. What's prettier to you: A blimp or a hot air balloon? Anyway, I was either in eighth grade or a freshman in high school, which would make it ... a long time ago.

It was really early in the morning, around 5:00 a.m. Like Lillian, I was fast asleep. Unlike Lillian, I got the hell out of bed to see what was going on. I kept hearing a loud "SHHHHHH!" noise, which I soon found out was the flame repeatedly going on and off.

It was a red balloon and it had two people in it, a man and a woman. They were on their way to some hot air balloon festival in New Jersey. Truth be told, I really don't remember the logistics of how or why their balloon landed in front of our house. All that was important to my 13-year-old brain was that there was an actual hot air balloon on my lawn.

I was the first person to realize what happened, as the balloon landed directly in front of my window. I woke my parents, whose room faced the back of the house. They thought it was equally amazing. I don't really recall what went down after that. Knowing myself -- and the fact that I was barely a teen -- I'm sure I went back to sleep. But it's something I'll never forget.

Lillian seems to enjoy the fact that a blimp landed in her yard. She was seen smiling and snapping photos the morning she discovered it. Maybe because, like my family and me years (and years) earlier, it was something utterly and completely unexpected. At at 94, that has to be kind of rare.

Isn't this cool? Have you ever had anything crazy land in your yard?
