Arnold Schwarzenegger & Maria Shriver Take a Break From Dirty Divorce

arnold schwarzenegger maria shriverSay what you will about the increasingly contentious divorce of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, the couple didn't hesitate to put their differences aside when their 13-year-old son Christopher had a serious surfing accident last weekend. Christopher, who was on a trip to the beach with Shriver, was taken into intensive care with a collapsed lung and multiple broken bones. At least Christopher has one thing he can take comfort in: The fact that both Shriver and Schwarzenegger are by his side means his parents won't let divorce stop them from teaming up to support their kids.

Might sound like common sense, but it's a bigger deal than you think. When families split, sometimes even the worst of circumstances can't bring everybody together.

My parents weren't together when I was growing up, and I can tell you from experience -- as can any of the other bazillion adult children of divorced parents -- that any event requiring a fragmented family to re-unite can be pretty dicey. Doesn't matter whether it's a wedding or a funeral or a school play or a birthday, there's always that chance that somebody is going to say something that sets somebody else off, and then all hell breaks loose.

If your childhood was anything like mine, you know what I'm talking about. Let's all keep these smiles plastered on our faces even though we should be cutting the tension in this room with a knife instead of the birthday cake! And Christopher's surfing accident is actually one of the worst case divorced parent scenarios, potentially: When a kid gets hurt on one parent's watch. Doesn't matter if the injury has nada to do with neglect, the finger of blame immediately points at whichever parent was present. If emergency room walls could talk ... whew!

But by all accounts, relations are peaceful between Shriver and Schwarzenegger, at least on the surface. Which is nice because, you know, I'm guessing Christopher already feels lousy enough. No need to bring up spousal support right this second.

Do you think Schwarzenegger and Shriver will continue to put their issues aside for the sake of the kids?
