Filming of 'Cash Cab' Episode Ends in Tragedy

cash cabI know first hand that taking a ride in the Cash Cab can be damaging -- my ego still hasn't recovered from my experience in the famed TV trivia taxi -- but I had no idea that it could be deadly. In Canada over the weekend, the producer of Cash Cab Canada was driving the taxi back to a garage after filming had wrapped when he struck a 61-year-old man.

The man was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive.

The identity of the victim hasn't been released yet and no charges have been filed, but it's been reported that the man did die as a result of the injuries he sustained after being hit by the Cash Cab. The driver and the rest of the production staff are cooperating with the Vancouver police. The show issued the following statement:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his friends and his family. My heart also goes out to the driver of the vehicle, a member of our technical staff, who is shaken and devastated by this tragic accident, as is our entire team.

I guess a lot of people dream about being on Cash Cab, but no one dreams about being on the hood of the Cash Cab as it rams you to death. What a terrible accident. I can't imagine what it would have been like if they had hit and killed someone while the show was filming -- this accident happened after the takes for the day were over. The incident occurred just before midnight.

The popular Discovery Channel show films in NYC, Chicago, and Vancouver. I was lucky enough to have hailed the Cash Cab on the corner of 78th and Amsterdam, and while I didn't win any money (I'm sorry, but our questions were crazy hard. We were 2 for 5. Oof.), it was a fun experience and one that I love remembering. My thoughts are with the family of the pedestrian who was killed -- I used to think I knew what it was like to be beat up by Cash Cab until now. Puts things into perspective, I guess.

Do you watch Cash Cab?
