Entenmann's Tasteless Casey Anthony Tweet Had to Be a PR Stunt

entenmannsAfter the Casey Anthony trial verdict was announced yesterday, Twitter and Facebook lit up with reactions from news makers and news junkies alike. One of the trends on Twitter was "#notguilty," because as we all now know -- cue collective groan/sigh/tears/fist-shaking -- Casey Anthony was found not guilty of murdering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee in 2008. And it seems like Entenmann's Bakery (yeah, the company that makes that coffee cake you can buy at your convenience store) felt like they had something to add to the social media conversation.

They tweeted, "Who's #notguilty of eating all the treats they want?!"

Uh. Oookay. Was co-opting the trial trend an intentional -- and yes, tacky -- move?

Someone sure didn't want us to think so, because an apology soon followed: "Sorry everyone, we weren't trying to reference the trial in our tweet! We should have checked the trending hashtag first."

Yeaaaaaah right! Suuuuure they weren't trying to reference the trial in their tweet! It only catapulted the "meh, whatever" brand into the national conversation. Somewhere an Entenmann's CEO is cackling, "Now everyone shall run to their local CVS and buy a glazed pound cake. Bwahahahahah!" This had to have been a total PR stunt, sadly, done in really poor taste.

Do you think Entenmann's intentionally jumped into the Casey Anthony Twitter convo?
