Israel Should 'Unfriend' Glenn Beck ASAP

Rachel Maddow is no fan of Glenn Beck and would probably agree with Helen Thomas on one thing: When it comes to politics, Israel really can be a "third rail." And Beck is about to step on it.

This August, Beck is planning a "Restore Courage" rally in Jerusalem. The rally Beck held last year in Washington last summer was about "Restoring Honor", but this one is planned to protest a proposed two-state solution with Palestine and to encourage "people of faith" to courageously stand with Israel.

Maddow wasn't supportive of his planned rally (for good reason). And on her show last night, she explained why. See below:

For those who support Israel, sometimes it feels like there is only one way to do so: unilaterally and unequivocally. But it's simply not true. The history of Israel and the current situation are as nuanced as Rachel Maddow said. With friends like Beck and Sarah Palin and all of the super conservative right wing media, Israel barely needs their enemies.

The fact is, the situation in the Middle East is tenuous at best right now. As Israel celebrated their Independence Day last Sunday (May 15), the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza commemorated Nakba Day -- or, "The Catastrophe" -- a day that marks the time they feel they were expelled from the land.

At least 30 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip were injured when Israeli tanks fired shells near demonstrators marching toward the border fence with Israel, according to Gaza medical official Adham Abu Selmaya. Whether it's true or embellished is another issue altogether. But either way, there is no doubt that Maddow is correct. The situation in Israel is volatile and now isn't the time for people who think in black and white and who don't see nuances to be holding rallies.

There isn't only one way to think about Israel and sometimes it feels like we're being forced to say there is. It isn't an either-or scenario. Glenn Beck may have us believe that Israel is correct and everyone else who questions that is wrong and evil and should be feared and hated. Beck said:

We have gone to the capitals of our states and to the capitals of our government. We have talked to all the power brokers. The only power broker, the only seat of government that can and will solve this problem with or without us is God. It is time to return inside the walls that surround Jerusalem and stand with people of all faiths, all around the world.

The fact is, we should support Israel. After 63 years, countless technological advances, an unparalleled defense, and major contributions to the world on a global scale, Israel has more than earned the right to celebrate their independence. Those who would say otherwise are just as wrong as Glenn Beck. But neither side sees enough of the nuances and the "gray" in the situation to actually begin to solve any of the problems. We need people who understand the complications and don't just see things as black and white.

Israel shouldn't be excited to welcome Beck into the fold.
