Rush Limbaugh Kicks the Japanese When They're Down

rush limbaughI'd love to see people try and defend Rush Limbaugh after this one -- and, wow, is it a doozy.

During a radio broadcast earlier this week, he mocked Japanese refugees for recycling after the earthquake. He could have stopped right there, but, of course, he didn't: He also laughed at the fact that a catastrophic natural disaster struck Japan despite the nation's environmentally conscious record. Apparently, the man is so desperate for interesting material, he has to resort to victim mockery.

Is he the first to make jokes at the expense of the plight of the Japanese people? Not a chance: People have been making offensive Japan jokes all week.

But that doesn't make it right, does it?

Here's what went down during the show. First, a caller asked Limbaugh:

If these are the people that invented the Prius, have mastered public transportation, recycling, why did Mother Earth, Gaia if you will, hit them with this disaster?

Limbaugh called this an "interesting question," and played a clip of ABC's Diane Sawyer, in which she expresses surprise that Japanese refugees living in the shelter she is reporting from have maintained a recycling program. Limbaugh mocked Sawyer for sounding surprised before he returned to his caller's question.

He's right ... They've given us the Prius. Even now, refugees are recycling their garbage ... and yet, Gaia levels them! Just wipes them out!

Now, I know that Limbaugh doesn't always get his facts straight, but does he really think that natural disasters only affect people who aren't eco-friendly? I'm not trying to sound all science-y, but I don't think that's how earthquakes work?

Ugh. Enough with the tasteless Japan jokes! Why would someone mock people who just are trying to maintain a little normalcy (recycling) in the midst of a crisis? I should know to expect as much from Limbaugh. Still, it amazes me to no end how people can be so cruel and unsympathetic in a time of tragedy.

Do you think Rush Limbaugh is a jerk for making fun of the Japanese?
