Molester's Castration Does Not Help Little Kids

surgeonUnusual justice is being served up in Louisiana today, and like revenge, it's a dish best served cold. Francis Phillip Tullier, age 78, went under the knife on Thursday to have his testicles removed. Castration was part of the deal his lawyer made with the court -- it was castration or it was jail for life.

Tullier was convicted of three counts of child molestation (hundreds of counts were brought up in court) and was sentenced to 27 years in prison back in 1999. The judge agreed to give him parole if he underwent surgical castration. The procedure was supposed to happen six months after the conviction, but was delayed until yesterday due to Tullier's ailing health.

Should this eye-for-an-eye method of justice be used in our courtrooms?

I'm on the fence. On the one hand, I do find it sickly satisfying that this man was castrated, but at the same time, I'm concerned about what he's still capable of outside of prison. While he's closing in on 80, and is now without testicles, I still think he's a threat to the young girls and boys he encounters. A fondling with his hands can be as equally traumatizing as a fondling with his penis. I don't think castration is a cure for a sexual offender and therefore I'd like to see him locked up until 2026.

I've seen enough Law and Orders to know that sexual molestation comes in all forms -- sometimes without touching. Photographing young girls at playgrounds, pools, grocery stores and then downloading on to the computer for masturbation purposes is at least disgusting and offensive, at most punishable in the court of law.

Courtroom transcripts revealed that Tullier wasn't thrilled with the idea of castration, but decided it was better than jail. "I lost my house, I lost my wife, and now y'all trying to take my manhood," he said. The judge replied: "It's time to give Caesar what Caesar is owed."

The 10-minute surgery was done at Tullier's expense, and after his release next week, he'll be registered as a sex offender and will live 20 miles from the town in which he molested young girls. I don't like this one bit.

What do you think of this case?
