First the Zodiac, Now Facebook Shutting Down?

mark zuckerbergMark Zuckerberg has decided that "Facebook is too stressful" and he's going to shut it down March 15. Yeah. Right. Do you honestly believe the owner of the most successful web operation in the world, who's movie namesake won top honors at the Critics Choice Awards last night, would just up and do that?

Common sense and average intelligence aside from the fact that this crazy Twitter rumor originated on the same website featuring other stories with headlines like: "Megan Fox is a Man," "Alien Spaceships to Attack Earth in 2011" and "How to Sell Your Soul to the Devil."

For those of you who have never heard of Weekly World News, let me clue you in ... IT'S SATIRE! Not everything with the word "news" is always real, folks. Ever watch John Stewart?

Funny part is, the rumor started working it's way around the web a few days ago, then settled down a bit -- perhaps because people were more concerned about their zodiac signs changing than anything else -- and then found new life again this morning as very earnest Twitterers to took the thing to embarrassing levels of gullibility and signed such  tweets as:

"so i guess since facebook is gonna be shutting down soon, i might as well get my twitter game up"

"Holy mother!!! Facebook is about to be shut down. Starting March 15th. Why?"

Holy mother indeed. People. Who are you, and how did your momma raise you? The fake article that ran on World Weekly News fakely quoted Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as saying the site has gotten too stressful for him to manage. Did I mention that this article is fake?

“I don’t care about the money,” said Zuckerberg. “I just want my old life back.”

Is there a made up quote that could be MORE opposite of what we know about Zuckerberg from all interviews and reports from credible news sources? Maybe this one, also from the WWN report:

“I personally don’t think it’s a big deal,” he said in a private phone interview. “And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That’s always a good thing.”

Oh, yeah, those WWN staffers are doing major high-fives this morning. Maybe even somersaults. If you still don't believe this is fake, go out and rent yourself a copy of The Social Network, the film about Zuckerberg and his social media empire, and tell me what you think then. Did I mention it won the award for Best Picture at the 2011 Critics Choice Awards last night?

Did you really buy into this rumor?
